- Peace and War

Between Hope and Despair

The powerful War Memorial in Stratford is by sculptor Walter Allward, who created the famous Canadian War Memorial at Vimy in France. The two heroic figures on the Stratford cenotaph eloquently display the despair of war and the hope for peace

Walter Allward had a dream when he was planning the Vimy Memorial in France. “I dreamed I was in a great battlefield. I saw our men going in by the thousands and being mowed down by the sickles of death…suddenly…I saw thousands marching to the aid of our armies. They were the dead…without the dead we were helpless. So I have tried to show this in this monument to Canada’s fallen, what we owed them and we will forever owe them.” Let us listen to the men who suffered and died in the First World War and finally learn the lesson of the First World War to be “the war to end all war”.

On The March

Witnessing a gathering of like-minded people who strive towards the ideal of peace is an antidote to the constant reminders of the big problems of violent conflict and environmental decline.
